Computer Science: Introduction to Digital Media – Joseph Ellis

Grade: 8th – 12th

Cost: $20 per month plus $20 per semester materials fee

Overview: This class is an introduction to using computer hardware and software to create multimedia projects. Topics covered include general computer hardware and software concepts, graphic design, web site design, use of images, video, and audio in digital and print media, and user interface design for software. The web site unit will cover a basic introduction to javascript, the scripting programming language used within web browsers. Also covered are legal and business issues that pertain to the creation of multimedia.

Pre-requisites: Pre-algebra is recommended. Also, some familiarity with computers is helpful.

Requirements: Students must have access to a computer with Internet access. It is also recommended that each student be able to bring a laptop computer to class, but not required. The software used in the class is freely available online.

Homework: The student will complete six multimedia projects during this course. There are also reading assignments and regular quizzes and unit tests.

Joseph Ellis

Joseph has over 15 years experience as a computer programmer and has worked on applications from large-scale government applications to game show simulation software for TV producers. Most recently, he has been involved in writing software for the iPhone and iPad. He has a bachelor’s degree in Information Technology with a Software Emphasis from Western Governor’s University. He also holds numerous professional certifications. He has been happily married for nearly sixteen years and is the father of four children. Vickie Spicer

Shortly after Vickie Spicer married Don, over twenty-six years ago and before they had any children, Mr. Spicer asked her if she would consider homeschooling. Mrs. Spicer’s response was, “What is that?” Their daughter arrived a year later, was home educated, and is currently a graduate student at Texas Christian University, after graduating in 2008 from OBU. Their son was also educated at home and is currently a senior at OC. After completing eighteen years of homeschooling, Mrs. Spicer continues to teach young people. Her passion is for Christian students to understand their culture and be prepared to recognize and defend their values against those opposite from which they have been raised.
