Overview: Odyssey of the Mind is an international educational program whose
mission is to provide creative problem-solving opportunities for students from
Kindergarten through college. Through solving open ended problems, students
develop creative-thinking skills that can be applied to real-life situations.
Teams from throughout the US and more than 20 other countries participate in the
program. Students learn to work together, develop team building skills, examine
problems and identify the real challenge without limiting the possible solutions
and their potential success. Ultimately the creative-thinking process is
nurtured and developed as a problem-solving tool.

Curriculum: Rod & Staff English

Overview:  A solid foundation of English grammar, basic writing skills, diagramming, sentence structure, etc. ‘

Requirements: an ability to read at “grade level” (or committed parents who are willing to read through the assignments with their student) and a year long commitment.

Homework: There will be 5 days of homework each week – the assignments will be very straightforward and will follow the text book (with only a few exceptions)  – if I see that the students are needing additional instruction, I will make necessary changes.  Each lesson should only take about 30-45 minutes, depending on the student.

Overview: This class introduces the basics of theater arts. Students will be involved in skits, monologues, theater games, readers theater and more.

(I will have a limited number of pre-purchased book sets available for purchase the first day of school but will need an indication at enrollment that your student will be purchasing from me.  Otherwise, you may request the booklist from me and purchase on your own.)

Overview: A primary goal of Prep for College English will be to equip students with the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in the various disciplines of writing utilized in academic settings.  During the course of the year they will receive instruction on how to compose effective paragraphs, build effective argument, and construct organized, structured writing.  They will be required to complete a variety of short writing assignments as well as a 7-9 page research paper (toward the middle/end of the year).  In the process, they will learn how to create an effective thesis statement for academic writing.  Students will also learn the grammar skills assessed by the ACT and other standardized tests for college bound students.  Students will take three sample ACT tests (English/Reading/Writing portion only):  one assessment test at the start of the year, one progress test at the middle of the year, and a final evaluation test at the end of the year.  The ACT will not be part of the student’s grade.  These tests will be administered in class and are given solely for self-evaluation and test taking experience.  Studies show that standardized test scores rise with an increase in familiarization.

Overview: This class is an introduction to all non-life sciences, from astronomy to physics to geology to the nature of light. Emphasized are chemistry and physics, and this class is recommended for any who wish to take those classes later in high school. It is a lab science course, and lab reports will be due nearly every week.

Pre-requisites: none.

Requirements: Required materials are a calculator and a notebook or 3-ring binder to take notes in. Students should always bring their texts to class.

Homework: Students should expect to spend about an hour a day on this class, more or less. Weekly homework, labs, and occasional quizzes make up most of the homework, as well as two semester papers. Tests are every two chapters.

Credit: 1 credit lab science

Difficulty: Middle and high school level.

Homework amount: moderate, grades administered

Teacher Expectations on homework due dates, attendance, etc: Moderate. I understand that life happens, but expect you to do our best.
